Non-government disability services could be jeopardised by Rudd Government tax reforms that may see billions stripped from church groups and charities, Coalition Spokesperson for Disability Services, Senator Cory Bernardi said today.
Senator Bernardi said that while tax reform that puts more money into the pockets of Australians is welcome, the Rudd Government must ensure that any changes will not result in disability services provided by church and charity groups being cut.
“Many Australians with a disability and their carers access disability services run by church and charity organisations. Those services must be protected,” said Senator Bernardi.
“Australians with a disability need a fair go and deserve a government who will ensure they maintain a good quality of life.
“The Rudd Government has already turned its back on people with a disability and their carers by attempting to cut the carers bonus and continuing to delay the implementation of the Commonwealth State Territory Disability Agreement.
“I am urging the Rudd Government and Parliamentary Secretary for Disability Services Bill Shorten to protect non-government services to people with a disability.
“Australians have been fortunate to benefit from tax cuts over the past ten years as a result of the Coalition Government.
“Any reform to our taxation system must be designed not to collect any more money than the government needs, while maintaining and improving on existing services to the community.
“The Rudd Government must provide those who are amongst the most vulnerable in our society with the services that are essential in maintaining a certain quality of life.”
