Senator Bernardi has recognised the contribution of 380,000 young carers in Australia as the Bring It! Young Carers Forum begins in Canberra today.
Senator Bernardi said that the Young Carers Forum enables young carers, service providers, health professionals and other organisations to discuss the issues faced by young carers in Australia.
“There are almost 400,000 Australians under the age of 26 who care for a person with a disability or long-term illness,” Senator Bernardi said.
“A report in 2002 found that young primary carers provided the same level of care as older primary carers. Young carers often do not have a choice about becoming a carer, yet most of them embrace their role once they are given the responsibility.
“In addition to their caring responsibilities, young carers also have their education to think about. It is important that young carers are given the support they need to continue their education. Respite is also vital for young carers to give them a break from caring.
“These issues, among others, will be discussed at this year’s Young Carers Forum.
“The Young Carers Forum was established by the Coalition Government in 2004 and has been held every two years since.
“Last month it was revealed that carers as young as ten were being forced to form their own support groups due to a lack of existing Government support.
“The Rudd Government must take the opportunity of the Young Carers Forum to implement services to recognise and address the needs of young carers in Australia.”
