Senator for South Australia, Cory Bernardi has today congratulated the crew of the Geosounder, and expressed gratitude to former Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, the Hon Bruce Billson for providing the funding that lead to the discovery of the HMAS Sydney.
“Today’s discovery would not have been possible if it weren’t for the funding provided by the previous Government through the Hon Bruce Billson during his time as Minister for Veterans’ Affairs.” said Senator Bernardi.
“Last year I lobbied both the Federal and South Australian State governments to provide funds to assist in the search for the HMAS Sydney. With 56 South Australian lives lost on the HMAS Sydney it is disappointing that the South Australian government failed to make a financial contribution to the search.
“The location of HMAS Sydney will no longer be a mystery in Australian history. The ship should now be preserved as a war grave and memorial for all those who lost their lives.
“The loss of Australian service men and women during times of conflict affects us as a nation. It is important for the families of those who serve to protect our nation are assured that the Government will always seek to identify the final resting place of those who gave their all.
“The Howard Government’s funding demonstrated the Coalition’s commitment to honouring those who make the ultimate sacrifice in defence of our great nation. It is a commitment that we should never shy away from.
“This discovery of the HMAS Sydney is an opportunity for the families of the crew to have some closure, and the rest of the nation to remember the sacrifices made by our service men and women.”
